DESIGN RATIONALE

The main purpose of our project is to make the science behind the processes of the aquaponic system accessible to everyone.  Therefore, we wanted our design to reflect the accessible intent of our project: to feel friendly, effortless, and colorful, while conjuring a philosophical symbiosis between the natural and technological worlds.  We used the same color scheme for our website, poster, and brochure materials, consisting of modest, cheerful blues and greens.  We feel that these colors tend to symbolize natural elements at their most harmonious: trees and plants, sky and sea.

The other important element of our web, poster, and brochure design was font.  We wanted our font to feel as basic as possible, so that it does not distract from the design or the content of our project.  However, we did not want the font to be so spare-bones that it felt cold or hostile (as Times New Roman can sometimes feel).  For our website, we chose the font Noticia Text.  Google Fonts says that Noticia’s “large x-height, ample proportions, big serifs and large apertures...allow the letters to be clear, even at small sizes on low resolution screens...designed and hinted to work well on computer and mobile device screens.”

Our final main design consideration was the flow of the poster.  Since our overarching goal is to make the processes of the aquaponic system feel accessible, we decided that the best poster would consist of a detailed, illustrated model of the system itself.  That way, the reader’s eyes can follow the processes in the order that they would happen, thereby understand the true symbiosis of the system.
